Project Overview:
King Khalid University was established in 1998 under the order of Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. It was formed through the merger of Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University and King Saud University in the southern region of Saudi Arabia. Initially, the university commenced operations with four colleges: the College of Sharia and Fundamentals of Religion, the College of Arabic Language, the College of Social and Administrative Sciences, and the College of Education. Over time, it expanded to include 29 colleges covering various disciplines such as engineering, computer science, and medicine. As of 2019, King Khalid University serves approximately 60,000 students. The university aims to increase its international ranking to the top 200 by 2030 as part of its strategic plan.
In March 2012, during the 2011–2012 Saudi Arabian protests, female students protested against injustice, inequality, discrimination, and mistreatment by university security staff. This led to clashes with security forces, and on 10 March, a sit-in was held demanding the resignation of the university’s rector, Abdullah al-Rashid. Subsequently, on 1 July 2012, al-Rashid was dismissed by King Abdullah and replaced by Abdulrahman al-Dawood.
